Making Your Own DIY Hand Cream

homemade DIY hand lotionA hand cream could make the skin of your hands become softer, smoother, and well-hydrated. This product could help your hands especially when they are tired from gardening or any challenging jobs. To be able to produce a product like this, you need to prepare the following ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup sweet almond o
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 30-35 drops lavender oil
  • 3 tablespoons grated beeswax

There are circumstances when some of the ingredients are simply not around. No worries since you can just replace them. For instance, if you cannot find a sweet almond oil, you can just look for an olive oil. This oil also has the ability to nourish the skin, so you are good to go if you have this ingredient. You can also opt for a calendula oil since this oil is highly recommended for sensitive skin. If you want, you can even mix a half almond oil together with your calendula oil to make the mixture more beneficial to the skin.

  1. Gather all the oils and combine them together in a small saucepan. Next, heat them over the medium heat until everything becomes warm. Wait for about 5 minutes for this.
  2. Once everything is heated, remove it from heat then add the grated beeswax. Stir the mixture until it is completely melted.
  3. For about 5 to 10 minutes, freeze the mixture for it to be cooled. Next, add the essential oils and start stirring them. You can add about 30 drops of lavender if you want the scent to be less intense. However, if you want a stronger fragrance, add 35 drops or more.
  4. Pour the mixture into a container and wait for it to be completely cooled.

Additional tips

You do not have to include water in this recipe, therefore you also don’t need to use a blender. Because of this, you also do not have to worry if the cream will be separated since the resulting mixture is sticky and stiff. You can expect the produced hand cream to be softer in warmer weather and temperature. When the temperature is cooler, on the other hand, you can expect the hand cream to also become harder.

Make sure to store the finished product at a room temperature. Try to store it in a refrigerator if you want it to be stiffer. You can do this especially if the weather is warm which could melt your product.

If you want your hand cream to have a thinner consistency when using a pump, you can opt for only 2 tablespoons of beeswax. Otherwise, if you want a thicker consistency like a salve, you can opt for up to 4 tablespoons of beeswax.

Now if you do not like the scent of a lavender oil, you can replace it with another essential oil of your choice such as orange or lemon essential oils. These essential oils encourage a citrusy fragrance. If you want a floral scent, essential oils such as rose or jasmine will do it.

If you want to produce more amount of hand cream, you can double the recipe. You can even do this if you want to give presents to your parents or your friends and loved ones. The recipe that is instructed above may go a long way, though, so you can also package it in small tins if you want to be a little more creative.

How to Treat Your Dry, Cracked Hands Aside from Applying a Hand Cream

1. Avoid using harsh soaps when washing your hands

Washing your hands using harsh soaps may irritate the skin of your hands and may even cause dryness to them. Instead of using harsh soaps, opt for the ones that are mild. You can especially use a moisturizing soap to ensure that your hands are getting the right treatment.

2. Rub your hands using a coconut oil

A coconut oil is purely natural and it has the ability to provide a good protection to your skin, making your hands feel softer and enriched with enough amount of moisture. The good thing about the coconut oil is that it absorbs into the skin way too quickly. Plus, it smells amazing and because it’s natural, it does not contain any harsh chemicals and ingredients that may harm your skin and make the dry condition become worse. It’s good when you carry an amount of coconut oil with you wherever you go so it may come handy when you need your hands to be moisturized.

When choosing a coconut oil, look for the one which is unrefined. An unrefined coconut oil is better compared to a refined one because a refined coconut oil is already heated, therefore its good properties are already removed. If you do not have a coconut oil with you, try other alternatives such as almond oil or jojoba oil.

3. Use a petroleum jelly

A petroleum jelly is a great help especially when your hands are dry and chapped. It’s because a petroleum jelly creates a good seal from the elements. This product may have a drawback, however, as it will leave grease marks on the things that you touch.

There are a lot of ways to keep your hands well-nourished and well-moisturized. Making your own hand cream through a simple homemade DIY hand cream for soft skin recipe is one of them. Follow the steps and tips explained above and start enjoying a healthier, smoother pair of hands from now on.
